We
are saddened to report that Speed (aka Scott Hall) passed away in January, 2004
at the age of 33.
Born in the south, an ex-Gainesville
dude later based in California, Speed's work featured intense graphics, often
with political metaphors and overtones. In addition to his music-related art he
worked for the NAACP, Nation of Islam and the Seven-Percenters.
Speed started out playing in
a band called Homestyle and toured with Uncle Tupelo. While in Gainesville he
got his start as a poster artist with Less than Jake,
and later worked as far afield as Nottingham, England, where Rock City featured
his work.
Note! Unlike most poster
artists (who tend to sign their work with a majestic flourish), Speed inscribed
a small - sometimes a tiny little - signature and series number on his posters,
and often added a small note or saying.
