About This Poster
For many years it hung unrecognized in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, but now a
painting by Johann Georg Edlinger has been discovered to be a portrait of Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart. Edlinger, (1741-1819)
was a painter at the Bavarian court who specialized in portraits.
On a return journey from Frankfurt to
Vienna, Mozart stopped in Munich for a week. He stayed at the Black Eagle guesthouse
in Kaufinger Street. The host knew the painter Edlinger. Wolfgang Seiller, the
discoverer is a descendant of the painter. Together with Rainer Michaelis the
curator of the Berlin Gemäldegalerie he undertook an analysis of the painting
using computer imaging technology.
