Lennon, Rage, on Radio 'Blacklist'

Click to zoom inJohn Lennon's inspiring plea for peace Imagine was one of many songs on a list of material thought to be too insensitive or not appropriate for airplay after the terrorist attacks on September 11. The list was circulated at Clear Channel Communications, the largest radio station network in the US.

Many people assumed the list was a joke when it was first distributed to the 1100 radio stations in the network, but CCC confirmed in a statement this week that "a Clear Channel program director took it upon himself to identify a number of songs that certain markets or individuals may find insensitive today". They emphasized that complying with the list was not required at their radio stations, and that many stations had indeed played some of the songs during the day.

In addition to a long roster of songs with titles and lyrics that were thought to be insensitive by the CCC executive because of references to New York, airplanes, and terrorism, other titles were clearly included because they expressed pacifistic sentiments. In addition to Lennon's Imagine, Cat Stevens' classic Peace Train and Louis Armstrong's version of What A Wonderful World were thought to be innapropriate. If pacificsm was out, dissent was even more likely not to be heard on Clear Channel radio stations:the list suggests simply that ALL songs by Rage Against The Machine be kept off the air.
